Abstract

A cornerstone of the professional relationship and a vital prerequisite to treatment, the diagnostic interview sets the tone for the therapy to come. It can also be a source of anxiety for beginning practitioners—and even for established ones working in new settings or with unfamiliar populations. This Fourth Edition of Diagnostic Interviewing breaks down the interview process over a wide range of clients and problems, creating a straightforward practical guide for beginning clinicians and an invaluable source of information for more seasoned therapists. Completely revised and updated to reflect diagnostic standards according to the DSM-IV-TR and the latest innovations in theory and practice, the book offers a wealth of useful interviewing approaches and techniques, and emphasizes the individuality of each client. The format of the earlier editions has been retained, with descriptions of the disorders, case illustrations, recommendations for assessment, standardized interview formats, discussion of sociocultural considerations, and other pertinent information. Readers will be able to approach the clinical art as well as the science of clinical and diagnostic interviewing with enhanced skills and confidence. Highlights of the coverage: Interviewing strategies, rapport building, and the role of empathy. The mental status examination. Consideration of neuropsychological factors in interviewing. Dealing with interviewee defenses and defensiveness. Specific disorders, including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, PTSD, and schizophrenia. Special populations, including marital dyads, abused children, couples, and older adults. As with its predecessors, this book is a trusted resource for all psychologists, psychiatrists, and other practitioners using the interviewing process in diagnosing clients. Additionally, Diagnostic Interviewing, Fourth Edition, also serves as a bedrock text for the instructor and the student.

Abstract

Electrodermal Activity, Second Edition Wolfram Boucsein From EEG technology to the polygraph, psychophysiology has become part of mainstream science, encompassing a number of subspecialties. In particular, the study of electrodermal activity (EDA)—the activation of sweat glands in the skin in response to stress or other stimuli—has given psychologists many useful applications over a variety of settings. Increased scholarly interest in EDA has brought with it a wealth of improvements in recording, analyzing, and applying data—and a need to make this knowledge available in a readable, practice-oriented format. The Second Edition of Electrodermal Activity brings together research from biology, psychology, and physics for a comprehensive understanding of the subject and its potential across mental health and medical disciplines. As in the original volume, the reader is given a thorough grounding in electrodermal phenomena: the anatomy and physiology of the electrodermal system, the biophysics of measurement, and the history of the field. From there, the book incorporates two decades’ worth of new knowledge, not just on innovative measurement and analytic techniques but also in the area of applications, with new or completely rewritten chapters on the use of EDA in: Decision-making. Human-computer interaction. Neurological diseases and brain lesions. Anxiety, depression, psychopathy, and schizophrenia. Detection of deception. Biofeedback, product evaluation, and more. Retaining the breadth and depth of information that made the original a bedrock text, this Second Edition of Electrodermal Activity is imminently useful to clinical psychologists, psychophysiologists, and forensic psychologists alike.

Abstract

The right to make our own decisions, foolish or wise, is at the heart of the concept of liberty. The sanest people marry the wrong spouse, take up an unsuitable career, and engage in dangerous sports; while friends and relatives may fret and cajole, we recognise that adults ultimately take responsibility for their own decisions. Similarly, the law enshrines our belief that people have a right to make their own decisions about their health and to refuse medical treatment if they wish, regardless of whether doctors can show that the treatment will be efficacious. …
